North Carolina election officials release provisional ballot counts after election

RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) – Election officials across North Carolina are releasing county-by-county counts of provisional ballots cast in the 2026 midterm elections.

According to the NC State Board of Elections (NCSBE), county election boards must publish provisional ballot totals by the day after an election under state law.

A voter must cast a provisional ballot if:

  • Their name is missing from the voter registration rolls for the voting location or their eligibility is questioned
  • They cannot show an acceptable photo ID at the polls
  • They are part of the state’s ‘Registration Repair’ process to update their identifying information

County boards of elections review each provisional ballot during the 10-day post-election canvass period to determine eligibility. Approved ballots will be added to certified totals before the county canvass.

NCSBE said the county canvass is scheduled for Nov. 13 at 11 a.m., and the state canvass is scheduled for Nov. 24 at 11 a.m.
